Unified Metrics Library - Energy Consumption

Helper question

How much energy did the company consume during the period?

Summary

Total energy consumption is the combined energy usage of a company, including non-renewable sources like fossil fuels and purchased non-renewable energy, as well as energy from renewable sources such as biomass and self-generated non-fuel renewable energy.

Unit

kWh

Description

The total energy consumption is the company's energy consumption coming from the following sources:

  • non-renewable sources
    • fuel consumption from coal and coal products
    • fuel consumption from crude oil and petroleum products
    • fuel consumption from natural gas
    • fuel consumption from other non-renewable sources
    • consumption from nuclear products
    • consumption of purchased or acquired electricity, heat, steam, and cooling from non-renewable sources* renewable sources
    • fuel consumption for renewable sources (including biomass, biogas, nonfossil fuel waste, hydrogen from renewable sources, etc.)
    • consumption of purchased or acquired electricity, heat, steam, and cooling from renewable sources
    • consumption of self-generated non-fuel renewable energy

Renewable sources are sources that are inexhaustible. As such, renewable energy covers wind, solar (solar thermal and solar photovoltaic) and geothermal energy, ambient energy, tide, wave and other ocean energy, hydropower, biomass, landfill gas, sewage treatment plant gas, and biogas.

Sources

EFRAG ESRS E1 Climate change. We derive the total "energy consumption" definition from paragraph 33.

Directive (EU) 2018/2001, Art. 2 (1) . Renewable sources

Examples

  • Non-renewable sources:
    • 10,000 megawatt-hours (kWh) of electricity from non-renewable sources
    • 5,000 kWh of heat and steam from non-renewable sources
    • 2,000 kWh of fuel consumption from natural gas
    • 1,000 kWh of purchased coal and coal product consumption
  • Renewable sources:
    • 3,000 kWh of electricity from renewable sources (e.g., solar and wind)
    • 1,500 kWh of heat and steam from renewable sources
    • 500 kWh of self-generated non-fuel renewable energy (e.g., solar panels on-site)

The total energy consumption for this company would be the sum of all these values, which in this example would be 23,000 kWh.
